School Based Mental Health Services

The South Carolina Department of Mental Health (DMH) is the leading School Mental Health Services provider across South Carolina. Spartanburg Area Mental Health (SAMHC) provides school children and their families with diagnostic services, intervention services, and a range of treatments including individual, group, and family therapy.

SAMHC School-Based programs focus on preventing mental health problems. An estimated 13 percent of children and adolescents have significant mental health problems such as anxiety, disruptive behavior disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and depression. Especially if left untreated, these disorders often persist into adulthood, with lasting effects on many aspects of life.

The mission of the Spartanburg Area Mental Health school mental health programs is to promote academic and personal success through identifying and intervening at early points and partnering to develop comprehensive treatment strategies for supporting the social and emotional/behavioral well-being of children and youth in Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union counties.

Schools provide a unique opportunity to identify and treat mental health conditions by serving students where they already are. School personnel play an important role in identifying the early warning signs of an emerging mental health condition and in linking students with effective services and supports.
