Intensive Community Treatment

Spartanburg Area Mental Health Intensive Community Treatment Services include individual therapy, family therapy, medication management, and skills training. Services can be provided in the therapist’s office, the community, or in the family home, depending on the need and preferences of the team.

ICT stands for “Intensive Community Treatment,” and is a program designed to provide services to patients with serious, persistent mental illness out in the community through a treatment team approach. This program is a long-term service that “meets patients where they are at,” to help them be as successful as possible at maintaining placement in the community, and avoiding further hospitalizations/incarcerations. Patients in ICT will receive contact regularly (from weekly, up to several times a day) through phone calls, in-home visits, Therapy services (individual, family, group), PRS, Peer Support services, Nursing services, etc. 

We are currently only serving patients in Spartanburg County, but will be moving into Union and Cherokee Counties as well.

The purpose of the Intensive Community Treatment program is to serve patients with severe and persistent mental illness, especially those with co-occurring disorders, at a high risk of re-hospitalization, homeless and the recently incarcerated, who require intensive treatment to maintain stability.

Intensive community treatment services are available for people with acute, complex needs who require outpatient services provided in their daily environment rather than at a behavioral health services site.  

Intensive Case Management (ICM) teams work with people who have serious mental illness and/or co-occurring substance use disorders, many of whom are homeless. The goal is to engage the individual in services to improve their quality of life and prevent hospitalization, incarceration and homelessness. Services include: 

  • Case management 

  • Wraparound services (help with housing and other basic needs) 

  • Mental health supports 

  • Medication management 

  • Crisis intervention 

  • Jail Diversion (services for individuals with severe mental illness whose behavior has involved the police)

How do I refer someone?

Please check out the ICT brochure and referral forms. If you have someone you think may be a good fit for this program, please staff with a member of the ICT team and complete a referral form. We will then complete an assessment and determine if they are appropriate for ICT!
